Knitting Abreviations

Learning to read a knitting pattern can be like learning a foreign language.  Below is a list of common knitting abbreviations you’ll find in knitting patterns.  Since it’s a long list, I’ve listed them alphabetically for ease in finding the abbreviation you’re looking for should you keep this list as your go-to reference guide.

When you see the terms “knitwise” and “purlwise” below, it means in the direction in which you are working,  For example:  Slip one stitch knitwise means slip the stitch from the left needle to the right, as if to knit and slip one stitch purlwise means slip the stitch from the left needle to the right as if to purl.

K3(4,) tog Knit next 3(4) stitches together
kfb increase 1 stitch by knitting into front and back of next stitch
M1 Make 1 stitch by picking up horizontal loop lying before next stitch and knitting into back of loop.
M1P Make 1 stitch by picking up horizontal loop lying before next stitch and purling into back of loop.
MB Make bobble: [(K1. yfwd) 3 times. K1] all in next st. Turn. P7. Turn. Sl1. K1. psso. K3. K2tog. Turn. P2tog. P1. P2togtbl. Turn. Sl1. K2tog. psso – bobble made
